Beneficiary
(of a donation programme): reader of the books supplied by the donation programme.
Book chain
Entire range of interactive professional components essential to the production and use of books, consisting, schematically, of creation (literary, scientific or other), publishing, printing, distribution and reading.


C
Carrier
Entity responsible for the transportation of books, by road/sea or air.
Collector
Individual or body collecting publications with a view to sending them to beneficiaries.
Consignee
(see also: recipient): person responsible for collecting the publications on their arrival.
Container policy
Large-scale dispatch of books rarely able to be used by beneficiaries.
Contextual actors
(of a donation programme): social, professional and/or political actors or entities who, although outside the chain, are involved in a donation programme.


D
Detailed request
Document in which the receiver specifies the target publics, the subjects and languages he or she is interested in, and absorption capacities.
Distance
One of the key variables of the transport stage, together with volume. Distance should be understood not purely in quantitative terms, such as the number of kilometres, but also from an operational point of view, taking into account the time required and the complexity of the route.
Donation, book donation
Transfer of a number of publications for educational or cultural purposes, free of charge or almost free of charge, to the recipient or beneficiary.
Donor
Individual or organization making available to the beneficiary/beneficiaries, usually with no financial advantage, one or several of his/her/its publications.


F
Framework agreement
General long-term partnership convention, likely to cover several dispatches or donation actions over several years.

Integrated approach
(to donation): methodology applying to all components of the book chain

Modelling
Simplification or schematization of reality for educational purposes.


O
Organizer
Person in charge, or designer, of the project, who acts as an intermediary between the different actors of the project.

Preliminary survey
Preliminary, detailed survey of the book situation on the ground in the country concerned, designed to draw up, as accurately as possible, knowledge of the book industry and existing library networks.
Programming
Planning of project implementation, taking into account the necessary balance between the project´s aims and the time and resources available.

Readership
All readers interested in or concerned by the reading of a book or category of books. See also: target public.
Recipient
(see also consignee): person in charge of collecting the publications when they arrive.


S
Sponsor
Individuals or organization responsible for funding a programme.


T
Target public
The type of beneficiary or, in other words, category of readers a donation project is aimed at: that is to say, its ideal readership.


V
Volume
One of the key variables of the transport stage, along with distance. It represents the quantity of books (in terms of weight and space occupied) of each dispatch.
Volunteer
Person who provides, free of charge, professional help or labour.
