INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE This online course is based on the publication Book Donations for Development (© UNESCO 2005). It is a training tool provided by the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity (www.unesco.org/culture/alliance ), to be used by all persons wishing to design and coordinate donation projects, and all those (librarians, political decision-makers, possible sponsors) who may be involved as direct or indirect partners. This online course provides students with a basic knowledge of donation projects, in terms of both policy and practice. The course is supplemented by a final test, which is designed to validate your knowledge before you put it into practice. The only thing a course cannot provide is, paradoxically, the most important thing: experience. We would therefore advise those who wish to put their new skills into practice to contact us so that we can steer them towards initiatives that will enable them to consolidate their knowledge. The educational content of the course was drawn up by Mauro Rosi, programme specialist at UNESCO (the ideas and opinions expressed in the course are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect UNESCO's views in general). Francisco d'Almeida, Rosa Maria Durand, Milagros del Corral, Alvaro Garzón, Gwynneth Evans and Georges Poussin also contributed to the content. Asfored and its director Aida Diab are responsible for the formal and technical development of the course. You can send your comments and questions to the author: Mauro Rosi, Division of Arts and Cultural Enterprise, Culture Sector, UNESCO, 1 rue Miollis 75732 Paris Cedex 15, France - m.rosi@unesco.org
Acknowledgements Special thanks go to Rosamaria Durand and Alvaro Garzón, leading specialists in book policies and prominent in the service of UNESCO. They guided and advised me during the manuscript's drafting phase, enabling me to draw on their exceptional experience. My sincere congratulations also go to Francisco d'Almeida, of the Association Culture et développement (Grenoble) and Gwynneth Evans, international consultant, for their advice and invaluable substantive contributions. I should like to express my gratitude to Georges Poussin, who, with full confidence, has worked beside me as I thought through the issues related to book donations over the last three years. Our conversations on the subject were most useful when it came to drafting this text. Lastly, I wish to thank Eftychia Amilitou for her thorough support in establishing the final version of this training modele.
